„Olha’s Italian Diary“ 2020
Film screening and discussion with director Olena Fedyuk
open for FLINTAQ+
Film synopsis: Olha is a woman who keeps going ahead. Her life is packed with enough events to fill up a few telenovelas and yet, it is so similar to the lives of many women of such background – Ukrainian labour migrants in Italy.
This film screening and discussion with the director will touch upon a topic of the personal and emotional price of the care work, look into the private lives and aspirations of domestic workers who are often rendered invisible through their service to emotional and physical needs of their clients. We hope to bring forward the centrality of the bodily and emotional experiences in care work, to capture professionalization of care and the emotion work migrant workers do around it. It also allows to have a glimpse into construction of a new migrant self, which often reflects the global demand in flexible gendered work force.
Olena Fedyuk is an anthropologist and a filmmaker, currently working at the University of Padua. She conducted ethnographic research with live-in geriatric carers in Bologna and Naples, looking into informal work, intergenerational care-chains, meaning of care and aging in a changing care regime. In her work she specifically paid attention to the costs of such care arrangements on the family of the migrant, exploring care-drain from migrant-sending countries (Ukraine) and the meaning and prospects of aging for migrant women themselves involved in the care work. Her most recent project, RightsLab, deals with transnational labour rights, overlap of gendered employment, labour and care regimes.
